The Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH) Department of Neurology is seeking a machine learning post-doctoralfellow for a full-time position applying computer vision and deep learningmethods to uncover information in multimodal video data collected from individualswith common and rare neurodegenerative diseases. Video data includes facialexpression, eye movement, speech, limb movement, and walking. The candidatewill become immersed in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, consistingof computer scientists, neurologists, clinical trials experts, and drugdevelopment teams, from varied groups in academia and industry. The candidatewould additionally take on a program management role (<20% time), involvingmanaging collaborations with pharma and tech companies. This role is ideallysuited for an individual with a rigorous training in deep learning and computervision methods, who wishes to understand and tackle important problems inneurology and healthcare. Individuals will be well positioned to pursue futureopportunities in either academia or industry (pharma and tech) and work will betailored to achieve these goals.


  • Develop pipeline for training a variety of deeplearning architectures on video data
  • Utilize both supervised and unsupervisedlearning approaches for network training
  • Utilize transfer learning approaches to enablerepresentations of less common diseases
  • Help frame cross-modal learning and data fusionproblems to integrate information from video data with other data types beingcollected in the lab
  • Develop approaches for visualizing andinterpreting the representations learned by the networks
  • Apply existing computer vision packages (e.g.,OpenPose, DeepLabCut, etc) to video datasets for landmark extraction
  • Engage collaborations within MGH Neurology aswell as groups at Biogen, Harvard SEAS, MIT CSAIL, Broad Institute, Duke CS,and UMass Amherst CS.
  • Form new academic and industry collaborations
  • Use coding best practices
  • Make methods and de-identified data widelyavailable
  • Publish journal articles and present work at computerscience and clinical conferences
  • Participate in grant writing and preparation
  • Work closely with the data collection teammembers, ensuring that video data are being collected as expected and adjustmentsare being made to maximize the quality of the data
  • Work with data architects and data managers to developscalable data analysis pipelines
  • Program management: field collaborationrequests from industry partners. Understand the companys needs, explainrelevant computational work being performed at MGH and mechanisms forengagement, and connect the company with the appropriate teams at MGH (withsupport from PI)
  • Qualifications

    Thepostdoctoral fellow will work with a team of physicians, physician-scientists, computerscientists, and clinical research coordinators. Work will primarily beperformed in a computational laboratory space on the MGH main campus, althoughregular meetings with collaborating groups in the Boston/Cambridge area areexpected. On occasion work may be performed in MGH neurology clinic space orclinical research space at other locations at MGH in order to gain clinicalexposure and better understand the data collection process. Travel toconferences and meetings to present research is expected.
